About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare test results to choose materials that meet the needs of a job.
  • Students predict how materials will perform using evidence from water, bending, and sliding tests.
  • Students identify ways to keep material comparisons fair.

How to use

Read the test descriptions together and review each graph's labels. Have students use the results, rather than guesses about familiar materials, to explain their choices.

Keeping Seeds Dry

At a farm's planting shed, Jo loads seed packets onto a small cart. The cart needs a rain cover. The cover must keep water out and wrap around a curved handle without tearing. Jo tests four materials before choosing one.

For the water test, Jo cuts equal-size squares. Each square covers the opening of the same cup. Jo slowly pours 10 teaspoons of cool water onto each square, waits one minute, and measures how many teaspoons reached the cup. A fresh, dry square is used for each test.

For the bending test, Jo uses another dry square of each material. Jo tries wrapping each square around the same cardboard tube. The graph and notes show the results.
