Getting Ready to Rinse Berries

A cooking class needs a liner for a berry rinse basket. The liner must let rinse water pass through. It must also hold the berries without tearing when wet. The class tests nylon mesh, cotton cloth, paper towel, and a plastic sheet. Nylon mesh is a fabric with many small holes.

First, students cut equal-sized squares. They clip one square over an empty tub. They pour ten small spoonfuls of cool water onto it. After ten seconds, they measure the water in the tub with the same spoon. They repeat these steps for each material. The graph shows their results.

Next, they test wet strength. They wet a fresh square of each material and clip it over the same tub opening. They place the same ten smooth counters in the middle for ten seconds. They check whether the material tears. Counters stand in for the weight of berries. No one eats food from the test materials.
