About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare materials by stiffness, water resistance, and light transmission.
  • Students use test evidence to choose the best material for a specific job.
  • Students identify fair-test choices and plan a material test.

How to use

Read the aquarium model story and material cards together. Have students point to observations that support each material choice before answering.

Materials for a Coral Cave

Test materials to choose the best one for an aquarium model.

Look at the material cards

The class is building a small coral-cave model for its classroom aquarium display. The cave roof must hold its shape, keep splashes out, and let light through so people can see the model coral. Read the observations on each card.

Three Tests for the Cave Roof

The class cut four samples to the same size. For the stiffness test, students placed small cubes on each sample until the sample bent down. For the water test, they put five drops on each sample and counted how many drops passed through. For the light test, they placed a card with five bright dots behind each sample and counted the dots that could be seen.

The class used the same number of cubes, drops, and bright dots for every sample. Each sample was tested on the same table. These steps helped the class compare the materials.
