About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare observations of how materials move, resist tearing, and take pencil marks.
  • Students choose materials with properties suited to waving pennants and still number cards.
  • Students identify fair comparisons and limits of material-test evidence.

How to use

Read the investigation aloud and pause at each tool picture. Have students compare the observations, then explain a material choice using evidence from both tests.

Getting the Field Ready

A recreation club is setting up a capture-the-flag field. Small pennants will hang from a rope beside the field. The club wants pennants that wave in a breeze and resist tearing when pulled. Elena tests tissue paper, thin cotton cloth, card stock, and stiff plastic. Card stock is thick paper. An adult prepares equal-sized rectangles of each material.

At the fan station, Elena clips the top edge of each sample to the same stand. An adult runs a guarded fan on low. Elena keeps the fan the same distance away and watches each sample for ten seconds. She records how it moves.

At the cube station, Elena uses fresh, equal-sized samples. She clips each one to the stand in the same way. She clips the same small bag to its bottom edge and gently adds five toy cubes. She waits ten seconds and checks for tears.
