Protecting Our Picture Cards
A class takes tide-pool picture cards to a beach. Each card has a picture and words. The class wants a wrap that keeps splashes off, lets students read the words, and bends around the card.
An adult provides smooth-edged pieces of bag plastic, stiff lid plastic, waxed paper, and paper towel. All pieces are the same size. The class uses fresh, dry pieces for each test.
First, students lay each material over the same printed card. They try to read its words. Next, they try to bend each material around the same thick marker without forcing it.
Last, students place each material over a fresh card. They add 10 drops of fresh water and wait one minute. Then they check whether the card stayed dry. They repeat this water test four times for each material.
Words are easy to read through both plastics. Through waxed paper, words look too blurry to read. Paper towel hides the words. Bag plastic, waxed paper, and paper towel bend around the marker. Lid plastic does not.
