The Coral Classroom Card Stand

Use test results to choose materials for an aquarium job.

Look at the aquarium samples

The class needs a small stand for a card that tells visitors about coral. The stand must hold at least 4 cubes, bend around a curved tank edge, and keep water drops from reaching the card. Use the notes and picture cards.

Notes from the Coral Reef Classroom Aquarium

Ari, Noor, and Mateo tested four material samples for a coral information-card stand. Each sample was the same size. They placed cubes on each sample to see how much it could hold. They bent each sample around the same curved edge. Then they placed 5 water drops on each sample and counted the drops that went through.

The clear plastic sample held 5 cubes, bent around the edge, and let 0 drops through. The craft foam sample held 4 cubes, bent around the edge, and let 2 drops through. The cardboard sample held 6 cubes, stayed straight, and let 3 drops through. The cotton cloth sample held 2 cubes, bent around the edge, and let 5 drops through.
