The Mango Tree Between Two Yards
In a sunny village, two neighbors lived side by side. Mr. Bello lived on one side of a low fence. Mrs. Adeyemi lived on the other side. Right on the fence line grew a tall mango tree, with branches over both yards.
One year, the tree was full of small green mangoes. "This tree is mine," said Mr. Bello. "No, it is mine!" said Mrs. Adeyemi. Each neighbor wanted the fruit first. They rushed to pick every mango they could reach. They tugged so hard that two branches snapped.
That night, Mr. Bello bit into a mango. It was hard and sour. Mrs. Adeyemi tasted one too, and she made a sour face. The mangoes had been picked before they were ripe.
The next day, Mrs. Adeyemi's granddaughter Funmi looked up at the broken branches. "The tree grows in both yards," she said. "Why not share it? If you wait together, the mangoes will turn sweet." The neighbors looked at each other and nodded.
The next year, they waited until the mangoes were soft and ready. They picked them side by side and filled one big basket. Then they ate the sweet mangoes together in the shade.
