The Lantern on the Ridge

High in the mountains, there was a small village. Every evening, Old Tavi climbed the ridge trail with a lantern. At the top, he hung it on a tall pole. The light showed travelers the way to the village through the dark hills.

One evening, Old Tavi's knees hurt too much to climb. "I hope somebody will light the lantern," he said. Many villagers looked up at the dark ridge. "Someone else will do it," said the baker. "It is too far for me," said the weaver. So the ridge stayed dark.

Sana watched from her window. "A traveler could get lost tonight," she thought. She took the lantern and climbed the trail. At every turn, the wind tugged at her coat. At the top, she hung the lantern on the pole, and its light glowed across the hills.

Soon a family of travelers walked safely into the village. The baker and the weaver saw them arrive. "We all saw the dark ridge," said the weaver, "but only Sana climbed." From then on, whoever noticed that the lantern was dark climbed up to light it.
