The Squeaky Harmonica

1Aunt Lena sent a harmonica
as shiny as a spoon.
I blew in hard. It gave a squeak
instead of any tune.

2I tried again. It honked and buzzed.
My cat let out a yowl.
She ran and hid beneath my bed
and peeked out with a scowl.

3Then I read Aunt Lena's card.
It said, "Blow soft and slow.
Breathe out, breathe in, a bit each day,
and soon the songs will flow."

4Each day I practiced after school
while sitting on the stairs.
I played for Dad, I played for Gran,
and for my teddy bears.

5The squeaks got small. The honks got soft.
One night, a tune came out!
It was the song we sing at school.
I jumped up with a shout.

6Now when I play, my cat comes near.
She does not run and hide.
She curls up warm against my knee
and purrs there by my side.
