Bridges Help Us Cross
A bridge is a path built over water, a road, or a deep valley. Bridges let people and cars travel where they could not go before.
Some bridges are built in the shape of an arch. The curve of an arch helps hold up the bridge. Other bridges rest on strong beams made of steel or wood. Many long bridges stand on tall piers, which go down into the water or the ground. On some very long bridges, thick cables hang from tall towers and help hold up the road.
A bridge must be strong enough to carry all of the people and cars that cross it.
