Coin Club

Every Wednesday at lunch, the Coin Club meets in Room 5. The members bring the coins they collect. They look at the tiny dates and pictures with a magnifying glass.

Today Nora showed the club a shiny new penny. Ms. Ruiz, the club leader, held it up to the light. "Look at that!" she said. "This penny is in mint condition."

Nora was puzzled. She knew that a mint was a kind of candy. What could candy have to do with a penny? She opened the club's dictionary to find out.

Then Pedro asked to trade his old nickel for Nora's new penny. At first, Nora said no. But after she looked at the nickel's worn edges and its old date, she changed her mind.

Pedro grinned, but he looked a little sad, too. "I will miss my nickel," he said. "Can I visit it next Wednesday?"
