The Ferry Horn

Tomás and his cousin Mei stood at the front of the ferry. The boat was leaving the dock, and gray waves slapped its sides. Then the captain pulled a rope, and the big horn went BOOM.

"Wow!" Tomás shouted, bouncing on his toes. "That is the best sound in the whole world!" He grinned at Mei. "I wish it would blow again and again!"

Mei pressed her hands over her ears. "It is too loud," she said in a small, shaky voice. "It makes my tummy jump!" Then she added, "I wish the horn would stay quiet."

Soon the horn blew once more. Tomás cheered. Mei squeezed her eyes shut and counted to three. When the sound stopped, she peeked at the harbor. "The sea does look pretty from here," she said, "but I do not like the horn."

Tomás giggled. "You can cover your ears, and I will listen for both of us," he said. Then the two cousins watched the island come closer.
