- Students tell real prefix words apart from words that only start with the same letters.
- Students add a prefix to a known word to make a word that fits a sentence.
How to use
Review that un- and dis- mean not or the opposite of, and re- means again. Read the story together, then let students answer the questions on their own.

The Saturday Dog Walkers
1Every Saturday, Ivy and her neighbor Sam walk two dogs for Mrs. Diaz. First, Ivy uses a key to unlock the gate. Biscuit, a big brown dog, and Pepper, a tiny puppy, run out to meet them.
2Biscuit and Pepper always get their leashes in a knot. Ivy has to untangle them before anyone can move. "They look like a bowl of spaghetti!" Sam says with a laugh.
3Pepper dislikes puddles. She hops around every one she sees. Biscuit is the opposite. He splashes right through the middle! At the park, Sam and Ivy disagree about which path to take. Sam wants the shady path, but Ivy wants the hill path. They decide to take turns.
4Suddenly, a squirrel runs by. Biscuit pulls hard, and his collar comes unbuckled! Ivy quickly buckles it again. Then she rechecks every collar to make sure it is tight. The squirrel scampers up a tree and disappears into the leaves.
5Back at the house, Ivy and Sam unclip the leashes and fill the water bowls. Before they leave, Ivy relocks the gate. "See you next Saturday!" Sam calls, and Biscuit wags his tail.
