  • Students use observations to plan a map showing feature shapes and locations.

How to use

Two Bus Yards, One Map

Compare two city-bus-depot places and model their land and water.

Read the depot observations

The city bus depot has two outdoor places. Read the notes about each place. Use the notes to answer the questions.

Notes from the City Bus Depot

A class visited the depot with an adult. They looked down from a safe viewing platform and made notes. The North Loop has a wide, flat paved yard. Near the east edge is a small pond with a rounded oval outline. A low grassy mound is along the north edge of the yard.

The South Loop has a flat grassy yard. A narrow drainage channel curves from the west edge toward the south edge. The channel is water, but it does not touch the pond in the North Loop. A long, low ridge of packed dirt lies along the east side of the South Loop.

The class will make one model with two labeled areas. They will use a flat board for the yards, blue pieces for water, and clay for raised land. Then they will draw a map as if they were looking down from above. The map should show the shapes, kinds, and locations of the features.

1.
Which view would help the class place the features on a map most accurately?
  • A. A view from above both loops
  • B. A view from inside one bus
  • C. A view from beside one fence
  • D. A view from under the depot roof
