A Backyard in Miniature

Use field notes to build and check a land-and-water model.

1. Investigate the Backyard

Read the investigation. Use the field notes to answer the questions.

The Class Investigation

A class visits a large backyard to make a land-and-water model. An adult leads the group along a dry path. Students stay out of the pond and stream.

Step 1: Choose a view. The class will make a map as if looking down from above. The back fence will be at the top of the map. The patio will be at the bottom.

Step 2: Observe the land. A grassy hill is in the upper-left part of the yard. Its outline looks round from above. Its middle is higher than the lawn around it. The rest of the lawn is broad and flat.

Step 3: Observe the water. A pond is in the lower-right part. Its outline is oval, longer from left to right than from top to bottom. A narrow stream starts in the upper-right part, bends twice, and meets the pond.

Step 4: Record the results. Students sketch the outlines and label the land and water. They will compare a trial model with these notes.

1.
Which description compares the hill and pond correctly?
  • A. The hill and pond are both in the upper half.
  • B. The hill and pond are both on the left side.
  • C. The hill is above and to the left of the pond.
  • D. The hill is below and to the right of the pond.
2.
Which outline best shows the pond from above?
  • A.
  • B.
  • C.
  • D.
