Submarines Go Under Water

A submarine is a boat that can go under the water. It can float on top of the water, too.

How does a submarine go down? It has big tanks inside. When the tanks fill with water, the submarine gets heavier and sinks. To go up, air pushes the water out of the tanks. The submarine gets lighter and rises to the top.

Many submarines have a long tube called a periscope. People inside look through it to see above the water.

Inside a submarine, there is not much room. On a big submarine, the sailors sleep in small beds. Some small submarines take scientists deep in the ocean. There, they can see sea animals up close.
