The Snowy Trail Signal Box

Test materials to help fix a trail shelter.

Read the trail test

Read Rowan's notes about the snowy forest trail. A bright spot means more light reached the card. A dim spot means some light reached it.

Rowan's Snowy Trail Notes

1Rowan and June were fixing a small signal box beside a snowy forest trail. A flashlight shone through one sample at a time. They watched a card behind the sample and a side card. The side card could show light that bounced in a new direction.

2They kept the flashlight, sample holder, and cards in the same places. Clear plastic made a bright spot behind it and no spot on the side card. Tissue paper made a dim spot behind it and no spot on the side card. Bark made no spot on either card. Foil made no spot behind it and a bright spot on the side card.

3The team wanted a window with a soft glow inside the box and a flap that stopped the beam without sending a bright spot to the side.
