Beam Cards in the School Kitchen

Test what kitchen materials do to a beam of light.

The kitchen light test

Listen to the observations. A flashlight shone toward a card behind the holder. A second card stood beside the holder.

Four kitchen cards

Nora and Ellis made a light test for the school kitchen. They put one material at a time in the same holder. The flashlight, the cards, and the distances stayed in the same places.

The clear plastic cover made a bright spot on the card behind the holder. The wax-paper cover made a dim spot behind the holder. The cardboard cover made no spot behind the holder. The foil cover also made no spot behind the holder, but it made a bright spot on the card beside the holder.

Nora and Ellis wrote down what they saw for each card. They used the notes to choose covers for a pretend kitchen display.
