About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare test results for materials that let light through, let some through, block it, or reflect it.
  • Students predict how changing materials in a light beam changes the spots on two cards.
  • Students use observations to choose materials and plan a fair light test.

How to use

Read the steps, notes, and questions aloud. Let students point to evidence before answering. If repeating the test, an adult aims the flashlight away from eyes and adjusts the smooth foil to send a spot to the side card.

Light at the Model Bin

At a potato farm, our class tests sheets for a model bin.

1. An adult aims a flashlight at a far white card, away from eyes. A bright spot appears.

2. Put a sheet in a tilted holder in the beam. It covers the beam. A second white card sits to the side.

3. Test one sheet at a time. Keep the flashlight, holder, and cards still.

4. Check both cards. Record the spots.

Clear plastic: bright far spot; no side spot.

Wax paper: dim far spot; no side spot.

Thick felt: no spot on either card.

Smooth foil: no far spot; bright side spot.

1.
What should we record to find out what a sheet does to the light?
  • A. How easily the sheet bends.
  • B. Where spots appear and how bright they are.
  • C. How wide and tall the sheet is.
  • D. What color the sheet looks in daylight.
2.
Sort the sheets by what they did in our test.
