About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students classify tested materials by how they pass, partly pass, block, or reflect light.
  • Students predict how changing a material in a light beam changes the spots on two cards.
  • Students use test evidence to choose materials and check whether comparisons are fair.

How to use

Read the passage, table, and questions aloud. Let students point to evidence in the table. If repeating the test, use a battery flashlight and keep its beam away from eyes.

A Light for the Puzzle Display

Snow covers the town. Inside the puzzle swap, Tessa tests covers for a display light. An adult aims a battery flashlight away from eyes. A white card behind the holder gets a bright spot when the holder is empty. A second white card sits to the left.

Tessa puts five same-size materials in the tilted holder, one at a time. She keeps the flashlight, holder, and cards in place. She checks for a flashlight spot on each card. Here are her notes. Light that bounces in a new direction is called reflected light.

Test Table
Material | Card behind | Card to the left
Clear plastic sheet | Bright spot | No spot
Wax paper | Dim spot | No spot
Thin white tissue paper | Dim spot | No spot
Thick felt | No spot | No spot
Unbreakable craft mirror | No spot | Bright spot
1.
What makes this a fair way to compare the materials?
