About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students use test observations to compare materials that transmit, partly transmit, block, or reflect light.
  • Students predict what happens when materials are placed in a light beam.
  • Students explain material choices using evidence from a flashlight test.

How to use

Our Class Test

Our class tests panels for a reading-corner light. An adult shines a flashlight toward a white card. With no panel, a bright spot appears. We put one material at a time in a tilted holder in the beam. The holder, flashlight, and card stay in the same places. Another white card sits to the side. We check both cards.

Clear plastic: a bright spot on the card behind.

Frosted plastic: a dim, fuzzy spot on the card behind.

Thick cardboard: no spot on either card.

Shiny mirror: no spot behind; a bright spot on the side card.

1.
We test a new panel. How can we make a fair comparison?
  • A. Move the flashlight closer, too.
  • B. Use a brighter flashlight, too.
  • C. Change only the panel material.
  • D. Move the white card farther away, too.
