  • Students identify what to keep the same in a light-beam test.
  • Students use test evidence to choose materials for a light-box design.

How to use

Read the story, test notes, and questions aloud. Have children point to the notes that support their choices before discussing their designs.

A Story Box at Rainforest Camp

Use light tests to choose parts for a puppet box.

Try the Materials

Listen to Nia's test. Use her notes to answer.

Nia's Light Test

At a rainforest camp, Nia builds a puppet light box. She tests four pieces. First, she aims a flashlight at a white card. Next, she puts one piece in a slanted holder in the beam. Another white card sits beside the holder. She keeps the flashlight, holder, and cards in the same spots for each test. She uses the same flashlight and checks both cards. Never aim the light at eyes.
