Odalys and the Quail Chicks

Odalys and Grandpa ate breakfast by the back window. Under the big bush, something moved.

It was a mother quail! Seven tiny chicks ran behind her in a line. They were fluffy and brown, and they peeped and peeped.

Then Odalys saw Nutmeg, her orange cat. He was sitting by the back door and wanted to go out. "Not now, Nutmeg," said Odalys. "You might scare the chicks." She carried him to her room and shut the door.

Grandpa tiptoed outside and set a flat dish of water by the bush. Then he came back in. The mother quail drank first. Then the chicks drank too. At last, they all ran through a hole in the fence.
