Use two tests to explore sound and motion.

Test 1: The Ruler

Listen to the class's test. Use the results to answer.

A Test on the Backyard Patio

A class visits a backyard patio to test sound. Moving back and forth quickly is called vibrating.

1. An adult holds a plastic ruler flat on a table. Part of the ruler sticks past the edge.

2. Nia gently pulls the free tip down and lets go. The class watches and listens.

3. Nia gently touches the moving tip to hold it still.

4. The class repeats the test three times. They use the same ruler, overhang, and gentle pull.

Each time, the free tip moves back and forth and hums. When Nia holds the tip still, both the motion and the hum stop.

1.
Which motion shows that the ruler is vibrating?
  • A. The tip bends down and stays there.
  • B. The tip moves back and forth quickly.
  • C. The whole ruler slides across the table.
  • D. The whole ruler rests flat on the table.
2.
What do the ruler results help show?
  • A. A ruler hums whenever someone holds it.
  • B. A ruler hums only when it stays bent.
  • C. A ruler keeps humming after it stops moving.
  • D. A ruler can hum when its tip vibrates.
