About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify evidence that vibrating materials make sound.
  • Students use observations to explain how sound can make nearby materials vibrate.
  • Students plan a fair comparison of sound and vibration tests.

How to use

Read the short station notes aloud, then have students use the observations to make predictions and explain their evidence.

Curriculum

NGSS standard covered

1-PS4-1

Investigate how vibrating materials make sound and how sound can make materials vibrate.

Sound at the Dune Ridge Research Station

Use observations to study sound and vibration.

Read the station notes

Read the notes about Tarek and Jo's investigation. Use the notes to answer the questions.

Notes from Dune Ridge Research Station

Tarek and Jo studied sound in a quiet room at the desert research station. An adult held one end of a thin metal strip over the edge of a table. Tarek flicked the free end. The strip moved back and forth, and the children heard a twang. When Jo held the free end still, the twang stopped.

Next, the children placed a tiny paper flag on a stand near a small speaker. The speaker did not touch the flag. With a tone on, the flag fluttered in 3 out of 3 tries. With the tone off, the flag stayed still in 3 out of 3 tries. They used the same flag and speaker each time.

1.
Which action made the metal strip vibrate?
  • A. Jo placed the strip near a table.
  • B. Tarek flicked the free end.
  • C. The children entered the quiet room.
  • D. An adult held one end.
2.
What can the children infer from the twang stopping when Jo held the strip still?
  • A. The table changed the strip's color.
  • B. The strip became heavier near the table.
  • C. The room became louder than the twang.
  • D. The strip's movement was linked to its sound.
