How Anne Helped Helen

Helen Keller was born long ago. When she was a baby, she got very sick. After that, she could not see or hear.

Helen could not tell her family what she wanted. This made her angry. Her parents found a teacher to help her.

The teacher was Anne Sullivan. Anne spelled words into Helen's hand. At first, Helen did not know they were words.

One day, Anne held Helen's hand under water from a pump. As the water ran over one hand, Anne spelled w-a-t-e-r into the other. Helen understood! Things had names.

After that, Helen learned many words. Anne helped her learn to read and write. Anne stayed by Helen's side for many years.
