About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify a system's solution as an ordered pair on both linear graphs.
  • Students connect shared graph points to step-count and heart-rate estimates.
  • Students use equations and graph evidence to verify or reject proposed solutions.

How to use

Have students use a straightedge to connect each named pair of points. Discuss why a solution must give the same output for the same input.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.EE.C.8.a

Understand that a solution to a system of two linear equations is a point where their graphs cross.

Fitness Tracker: Shared Log Points

Use graph intersections to compare two estimates of the same measurement.

Step-Count Estimates

Two tracking methods estimate the same person's step count. Read both axis labels carefully. Connect only the pairs named in each prompt.

For Questions 1–5, x is minutes relative to a saved checkpoint. The y-coordinate is the change in step count from that checkpoint's baseline, in hundreds of steps. Negative values mean before the checkpoint or below the baseline.

Connect P to Q for the wrist estimate and R to T for the corrected estimate. Where is the point that belongs to both graphs?
  • A. It is on the x-axis, 2 units right of the origin.
  • B. It is at the origin, where the two axes meet.
  • C. It is on the y-axis, 2 units above the origin.
  • D. It is on the y-axis, 2 units below the origin.
