About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify a system's solution as a point on both graphs.
  • Students check whether an ordered pair satisfies both linear equations.
  • Students interpret intersection coordinates in phone-plan comparisons.

How to use

Use after introducing graphs of linear equations. Have students draw straight lines through each plan's plotted points, then discuss the final reasoning question.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.EE.C.8.a

Understand that a solution to a system of two linear equations is a point where their graphs cross.

Phone Plans: Where the Costs Meet

Connect shared graph points to solutions of two linear equations.

Read the Crossing

For each phone plan, x is monthly data use in GB and y is monthly cost in tens of dollars. For example, y = 6 means $60. Ignore taxes and other fees.

Flex costs $20 plus $10 per GB, so y = x + 2. Flat costs $50 regardless of data use, so y = 5. Points from their graphs are plotted below. Use a straightedge to connect F, S, and G for Flex. Connect H, S, and J for Flat.
