About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify a system's solution as an ordered pair shared by both linear graphs.
  • Students interpret graph intersections in basketball scoring situations.
  • Students use coordinates and equations to evaluate proposed intersections.

How to use

Provide a straightedge for connecting the labeled points. Have students read each intersection before checking it against the equations or scoring context.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.EE.C.8.a

Understand that a solution to a system of two linear equations is a point where their graphs cross.

Tournament Desk: When Scoring Lines Meet

Use graph intersections to check tournament scoring models.

Score-Margin Models

The tournament desk compares two teams playing in separate games. A score margin is a team's score minus its opponent's score. A negative margin means the team is behind. For Questions 1–4, use a straightedge to connect A to B and C to D. Each segment is part of a linear model.

Here x is minutes relative to halftime: negative values are before halftime. The y-coordinate is the score margin in points. A–B models the Comets; C–D models the Sparks.
