Robotics Results: Check the Meaning
Test word meanings against a news report and dictionary entries.
Test Against the Report
Read the report. For each meaning check, compare the guess with what actually happens in the text.
A Pause Before the Final Score
1Saturday’s regional robotics competition ended with students watching a blank scoreboard. Brook Terrace School’s machine had carried foam blocks across a marked course, but the judges needed to review its final delivery. The school’s student news team stayed beside the competition floor to report the result.
2The posted results were tentative. Judges could revise them after checking recordings of the last round. Team member Dalia folded her notes and waited. Across the floor, another team was already packing its equipment into gray cases.
3Earlier, Brook Terrace’s robot had stalled beside the delivery zone. Its wheels stopped turning, although its lights remained on. Teammate Kenzo resisted the urge to reach across the boundary; touching the machine during that part of the round would cost points. After a brief pause, the robot moved forward and released its block.
4The team’s novel attachment drew questions from nearby competitors. Instead of gripping each block from above, a curved scoop slid underneath it. Dalia explained that an early version had dropped blocks during practice. The students had changed the scoop’s angle and tested the design with several loads. Their final adjustment was precise: they moved one support by a tiny, carefully measured amount.
5When the screen lit up, Brook Terrace had won by a narrow margin: just two points separated the top teams. That finish would qualify the students for the next competition, whose rules required a top-three result. Kenzo pulled a reserve battery from the equipment case, then returned it to its labeled pocket. The spare had not been needed. Before leaving, the students shared their scoop sketches with a team that had asked about the design.
- A. Keep the guess because another team was packing equipment.
- B. Revise the guess because the results could still be changed.
- C. Keep the guess because the results appeared on a scoreboard.
- D. Revise the guess because the results described practice rounds.
