Picture-Day Haircut
Dario had never had his hair cut anywhere except his own kitchen, where his mom trimmed it with a pair of scissors and a towel around his shoulders. But on the Friday before picture day, his uncle Felix walked him three blocks to Okafor's Barbershop. A red-and-white striped pole turned slowly beside the door. A bell jingled above their heads as they stepped inside.
The shop was small and bright. Three black leather chairs faced a long mirror, and the floor was a checkerboard of black and white tiles. Somewhere behind the counter, a radio played soft jazz. The air smelled sharp and minty, like the green tonic in the tall bottles by the sink. Old photos of smiling customers covered the wall beside the mirror.
Mr. Okafor, a tall man with a gray beard, patted the middle chair. Dario climbed up, and the seat let out a soft hiss as the barber pumped it higher with his foot. Then Mr. Okafor swung a blue cape around Dario's shoulders. It snapped in the air like a flag on a windy day, and its stiff collar pressed against his neck. Dario gripped the armrests, which felt cool and smooth under his sweaty palms.
The clippers came first. They buzzed like a bee trapped in a jar, and a tickly shiver crawled along the back of Dario's head. Tiny dark curls tumbled down the cape and landed on the tiles. Next came the scissors, snip, snip, snip, close to his ears. Mr. Okafor worked slowly, turning Dario's head gently with two fingertips.
At the end, the barber brushed a puff of powder across Dario's neck. It smelled sweet and dusty, like a baby's blanket. Then Mr. Okafor spun the chair toward the mirror. Dario's hair was short on the sides and neat on top, with a crisp line along his forehead. He reached up and rubbed the back of his head. It felt soft and prickly at the same time, like the bristles of a new toothbrush. "Picture-day ready," Uncle Felix said with a grin, and Dario grinned right back.
