About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify evidence that energy moves by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.
  • Students use observations and temperature data to trace energy between places.

How to use

Read the field journal aloud or have students read it independently. Ask students to point to the journal evidence before they answer each question.

Curriculum

Energy Notes from the Community Bike Shop

Follow energy as it moves during a student's shop journal.

Read the field journal

Read Tessa's notes from four days at the community bike shop.

Tessa's Community Bike Shop Journal

1Day 1—Headlamp check: I connected a small battery pack to a bike headlamp with two wires and closed the switch. The lamp lit. When I opened the switch, the lamp went dark. The battery pack and lamp were about 1 meter apart, with the wires between them.

2Day 2—Bell check: I struck a bike bell at the repair stand. A thin paper tag hanging 30 centimeters away quivered while the bell rang. When I held the bell still and did not strike it, the tag stayed still. The tag was not connected to the bell.

3Day 3—Safety-strip check: I aimed the lit headlamp at a reflective safety strip. A bright patch appeared on a white card beyond the strip. A clear sheet placed in the beam did not hide the patch. When an opaque cardboard sheet covered the headlamp, the patch disappeared.

4Day 4—Handlebar check: The shop air and both metal handlebars started at 18°C. I held one handlebar grip with my warm hand for 5 minutes. The matching grip stayed untouched. The table shows the temperatures after the test.

5Handlebar | Starting temperature | Temperature after 5 minutes
Grip touched by hand | 18°C | 25°C
Matching untouched grip | 18°C | 18°C

1.
Which observation gives evidence that an electric current moved through wires?
  • A. The paper tag quivered beside the bell.
  • B. The touched grip became warmer than the other grip.
  • C. The headlamp lit when the closed circuit had two wires.
  • D. The headlamp made a bright patch on a white card.
2.

How many degrees Celsius did the touched handlebar warm during the test?  °C
