About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students use family data to identify traits that offspring share with their parents.
  • Students compare offspring to describe variation within plant and animal groups.
  • Students support a claim about inherited traits with evidence from two graphs.

How to use

Read the family records together and review the graph labels. Have students use both graphs to support their final claim with evidence.

A Nature Club Visits the Zoo Rabbit Nursery

Keeper Tessa shares family records with a nature club at the children's zoo. The records describe rabbits in the nursery and pea plants grown on a sunny shelf there. A trait is a feature of a living thing, such as fur color or flower color. Offspring are the young of parents.

The rabbit records follow two parent pairs. Both parents in Family A have black fur. Both parents in Family B have brown fur. Tessa records the fur color of eight offspring from each pair. She observes the young rabbits at the same age. Each family receives the same kind of food, water, and shelter.

The club also follows two pea plant families. Both parents in Family P have purple flowers. Both parents in Family W have white flowers. Seeds made by each parent pair grow into eight offspring plants. The plants receive the same amounts of water and light in matching pots. The club records flower color when the plants bloom.

Each graph shows offspring from these parent pairs, not all rabbits or all pea plants. Keep each offspring group connected to its own parent record as you compare the colors.
