Pack Goats and Pea Family Records

Compare family records at a mountain trail rest stop.

Pack Goat Families

Read the records. Use the goat graph to answer questions 1–4.

Imani's Trail Records

At a mountain trail rest corral, ranger Imani keeps records of pack goat families. The goats help carry supplies along the trail. Imani also grows pea plants in large planters beside the corral. She knows which parents produced each group of young goats and pea plants. Young living things are called offspring. A trait is a feature of a living thing, such as coat color or flower color.

Imani labels the goat families A and B. Both parents in family A have black coats. Both parents in family B have brown coats. She records the coat color of each of their six kids. A kid is a young goat.

She labels the pea families C and D. Both parents in family C have purple flowers. Both parents in family D have white flowers. She grows eight offspring plants from each family and waits until they bloom. She records each plant's flower color. The graphs show her observations, not a rule about what every future offspring will look like.
