The Meridian Square Order
On a busy avenue in the Meridian Square neighborhood, Leena and her grandmother, Salma, run Corner Frame Workshop. Their small shop specializes in wooden window boxes for apartment buildings and storefronts. Instead of making many kinds of products, they spend most days measuring boards, cutting them, sanding rough edges, and painting the boxes. Repeating these tasks helps them work skillfully and quickly.
Corner Frame cannot finish a large courtyard order by itself. Omar, who works for a building-supply company, brings lumber. Lumber is a good the workshop uses. Rosa's metalworking shop makes brackets, also goods, that hold boxes safely against walls. Greenway Nursery grows plants for customers to place in the boxes. Dae, a carpenter, installs the boxes, and Tasha's bicycle courier service carries small orders across the neighborhood. Delivering and installing are services.
Ms. Vega manages an apartment building. She hires Corner Frame for window boxes and pays for plants and installation. Leena writes in her notebook, "Our shop can build the boxes, but this order also needs wood, brackets, plants, delivery, and installation." She notices that a neighborhood order moves through several businesses. Each worker focuses on a particular task, while customers and businesses depend on one another for goods and services.
