Many Jobs at Heron Bend
Heron Bend is a river town built on both sides of a wide river. The Riverglide Ferry carries people, bicycles, and small loads from one bank to the other. Its crew specializes in making safe, scheduled crossings. The crew does not build boats, repair engines, or study storms. Different workers focus on those jobs.
Jun's boatyard builds strong wooden ferryboats. Riverglide bought its ferryboat from the boatyard. The ferry also needs fuel, so a fuel depot delivers diesel to the dock. Riverglide pays Sal, a trained mechanic, for an engine inspection each week, and Sal fixes any problems. These workers provide goods or services that keep the ferry ready.
A weather office sends Riverglide a forecast about storms and the river's height. The captain uses these reports when deciding whether a crossing is safe. Ticket workers collect fares and help riders board. Each group has a different skill, tool, or responsibility.
The ferry connects more than passengers. On market mornings, a bakery on the east bank sends bread to a café on the west bank by ferry. People on either bank can reach stores and jobs on the other side. If a fuel delivery is late, the ferry may make fewer trips. If the mechanic finds an engine problem, crossings may pause until the repair is finished. The town's work depends on many people doing their particular jobs.
