One Saturday at the Community Center
Westbridge is a small town beside a river. The community center has one Saturday crew of volunteers. This month, the crew has only 8 hours to work because its members have other jobs and family plans. The center also has enough lumber for only one project.
The neighborhood committee must choose one project. Repairing two benches outside the center takes all 8 hours. Building three produce crates for the food pantry takes 5 hours. Painting four signs to help visitors find the center takes 3 hours. The crew cannot finish two projects in the same Saturday.
The committee gathers information before choosing. A safety check says one bench is loose and should be repaired soon. The food pantry can use its current boxes for another month. Visitors have asked for signs, but they can use the center's front door and a paper map for now. The committee ranks the bench repair first, the crates second, and the signs third.
The crew's time and lumber are scarce resources: the center has less of them than it needs to complete every possible project. The committee chooses the bench repair. It gives up the other two projects for now. The choice uses limited resources for the need the committee considers most urgent.
- A. The center has several projects but not enough resources to finish them all.
- B. The volunteers want to work longer than the center allows.
- C. The food pantry has no boxes for any future deliveries.
