Sloth Facts: Take Notes and Sort Them

Gather facts from an article, write brief notes and sort them.

Read the article

Ines is doing a report on sloths. She found this article in a children's science magazine. Read it carefully.

Meet the Sloth

1Sloths live in the warm, wet rainforests of Central America and South America. They spend almost their whole lives high in the trees. A sloth hangs from branches with its long, curved claws. It can eat and even sleep while hanging upside down. A mother sloth carries her baby on her belly as she moves through the trees.

2Sloths eat mostly leaves. Leaves do not give an animal much energy, and they take a long time to break down inside a sloth's body. To save energy, sloths move very slowly. A sloth may spend many hours each day resting or sleeping.

3A sloth's fur is long and shaggy. Tiny living things called algae can grow in it and give the fur a greenish color. This color helps a sloth blend in with the leaves around it. That makes it harder for jaguars and eagles to spot a sloth.

4Sloths are slow in the trees, but they are good swimmers. A sloth may drop from a branch into a river and paddle across with its long arms. About once a week, a sloth climbs all the way down to the ground to go to the bathroom. This trip is dangerous, because a slow sloth on the ground is easy for hungry animals to catch.
