Read about Kofi's folder

Read the story. It tells about everything Kofi wrote in one month.

Kofi's Red Folder

1Kofi's class spent a month painting a mural on the wall outside the school library. During that month, Kofi kept every piece of writing he made in a red folder. Some pieces took him only a few minutes. Others took many days.

2On the first day, Kofi wrote a quick note to his friend Rosa: "Can you bring your green paint tomorrow? Thanks!" It took him two minutes, and he tucked it into her cubby.

3The class needed more helpers, so Kofi made a poster for the hallway. He finished it in one class period. It said, "Join the Mural Crew! Painting is fun, and it will make our school brighter. Come to Room 12 on Friday!"

4Kofi also wrote a report about how artists plan a mural, and it took two weeks. First, he read three library books and took notes. Then he wrote a draft, shared it with a partner, and fixed his mistakes. Finally, he copied a neat final version for the class book.

5On the weekend, Kofi began a made-up story about a paintbrush that could talk. He worked on it a little each day for a week. When it was done, he read it aloud to his little sister at bedtime.

6When the mural was finished, Kofi sat down one afternoon and wrote a thank-you letter to Mr. Ortiz, the art teacher, for teaching the class to mix colors. Each night of the month, Kofi also spent five minutes writing in his journal about his day, just for himself.
