A Surprise for Grandpa Sam
Grandpa Sam was turning seventy, and Lin's family wanted to give him a surprise party. He had never had a party before. “Please don't spill the beans,” Mom told Lin. “He must not find out.” Lin nodded and promised to keep the secret.
On Saturday morning, the whole family got busy. Cousin Ana came early to lend a hand. Setting up the tables was a piece of cake. Uncle Raj kept an eye on the street from the window. Dad made a huge pot of bean soup, and Lin carried it to the table with both hands. She was careful not to spill a single bean.
At noon, Uncle Raj called out, “Grandpa's car is turning the corner!” Everyone hid behind the sofa and stayed very still. Nobody made a sound. Lin felt butterflies in her stomach as the front door opened.
“Surprise!” everyone shouted. Grandpa laughed and clapped his hands. Lin cut a piece of cake for each guest, and Grandpa gave her a big hug. “This is a wonderful day,” he said. Then everyone ate soup and cake and shared stories until evening.
