Firefly Night: Omar Reads the Count Steps

Read carefully to learn how to count fireflies.

Read with a purpose

Before you read: read to find out how Omar and Aunt Rosa count fireflies.

Firefly Night

1One warm June evening, Omar and his aunt Rosa sat on the back steps with a clipboard. A nature center had asked families to count the fireflies near their homes. The counts would help scientists learn where fireflies live.

2Before they began, Aunt Rosa handed Omar the sheet of steps. "Read it carefully," she said. "If we skip a step, our count will not be useful."

3Omar reached over and switched off the porch light. Soon the yard filled with tiny yellow-green blinks. "Fireflies are not really flies," Aunt Rosa whispered. "They are beetles that make light inside their bodies."

4Omar counted 7 flashes the first time, 12 the second time, and 9 the third time. He wrote each number on the sheet. "Some of them blink fast and some blink slowly," he said. "Different kinds of fireflies flash in different patterns," Aunt Rosa told him. "Each kind has its own secret code."

Firefly Count Steps

Step 1: Wait until the sky begins to get dark.

Step 2: Turn off porch lights and flashlights. Fireflies use their flashes to find each other, and bright lights make that hard.

Step 3: Stand or sit in one spot and look at the grass and bushes.

Step 4: Count the flashes you see in ten seconds.

Step 5: Count three times. Write down each number.
