The Lemonade Stand

Rosa and her cousin Mateo set up a small table at the end of their street. Rosa taped a bright yellow sign to the front, and Mateo carried out a cold jug of lemonade. It was a hot Saturday, and the sidewalk felt warm under their shoes.

“Do you think anyone will stop?” asked Mateo. Rosa smiled and said, “Our sign is easy to see, so I think they will.”

Soon Mr. Okafor came by with his dog. “That looks delicious,” he said. “I would like one cup, please.” Rosa poured the lemonade slowly so it would not spill. Mateo handed over the cup and said, “Thank you for stopping!”

A girl on a bike rolled up next. “How much is a cup?” she asked. “It costs fifty cents,” Rosa told her. The girl dropped two coins into the jar and called, “Please save one more cup for my brother!”

By the end of the afternoon, the jug was empty. Mateo counted the coins twice. “We sold every cup!” he cheered. Rosa laughed and said, “Next Saturday, let’s make two jugs.”
