Kofi Interviews a Crane Operator

Kofi's class is making a book called Jobs in Our Town. Each student will write a report that teaches readers about one job. Kofi chose his aunt Dana, who runs a tall tower crane at a building site downtown. On Sunday, he asked her questions and wrote down what she said.

"My job is to lift heavy things that people can't carry," Aunt Dana explained. "I move steel beams, big buckets of concrete and stacks of pipes up to the top of a new building."

"I work in a small room called the cab, way up at the top of the crane. I climb a long ladder inside the tower to get there. Some days I eat my lunch up there, too."

"I can't always see where a load will land, so a signal person on the ground helps me. We talk by radio, and the signal person also uses hand signals."

"Safety comes first. Before I start, I check the crane's parts. If the wind gets too strong, I stop working, because wind can make a heavy load swing."

Then Aunt Dana laughed. "My favorite color is green, and I have a cat named Pepper." Kofi wrote that down too, but he was not sure it belonged in his report.
