Game Club Day
SETTING: The game room at the Elm Street Rec Center. Dev, Hana and Kwame have each made a board game. Ms. Park, the club leader, looks at the three boxes on the table.
MS. PARK: These games look amazing! Before we show them to the other kids, let's check the titles on your boxes.
DEV: My game is called Race to the Top of the Volcano. I put a capital letter on every word except to, the and of.
MS. PARK: Nice work, Dev. Short words like to, the and of stay lowercase when they are in the middle of a title. The first word, the last word and all the important words get capitals.
HANA: Uh-oh. My box says Lost In the Crystal cave.
MS. PARK: Let's look at it together. Is in a short word or an important word?
HANA: It is a short word in the middle, so it should be lowercase. And cave is the last word, so it needs a capital C!
KWAME: My game is The Snail and the Rocket. The word the is in my title two times. Only the first one has a capital letter.
MS. PARK: That's right, Kwame. The first word of a title always gets a capital letter, even when it is a short word.
HANA: I will fix my box right now. Then we can play all three games!
