About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students model how an animal can move seeds from a plant to a new place.
  • Students compare model-test results and use evidence to judge a seed-moving design.
  • Students identify model parts and actions that represent an animal moving seeds.

How to use

Read the investigation together and discuss what each model part represents. Have students use the graph and test notes as evidence for their choices.

Duck Routes at Willow Reading Garden

Use model tests to show how an animal can move seeds to a new place.

Read the investigation

A class studies the pond behind the Willow Reading Garden. Read the notes and use the graph to answer the questions.

A Duck and the Berry Seeds

Near the pond, berry plants grow beside the water. Ducks sometimes eat small fruits. The class made a model to show one way a duck could move seeds. A paper duck carried a paper berry from the berry mat to the far shore mat. A removable seed token was inside the berry. At the far shore, students opened the berry and placed the seed on the soil mat.

The class tested three setups for two rounds. In the inside-cup setup, a small cup inside the paper duck held the seed token. In the outside-tab setup, the token rested on a tab outside the duck. In the no-duck setup, the berry stayed on the starting mat while the students watched for a token to reach the far shore. Each setup began with six seed tokens, and the class used the same path and distance. The graph shows the total number of tokens that reached the far shore in both rounds.
