Seed Rides Beside the Four-Square Court

Build and test a model of an animal moving seeds.

From an Observation to a Model

Read about the seed ride. Use the observations to answer the questions.

A Hooked Traveler

Beside the playground's four-square court, a dog brushes past a plant. Nia spots a dry seed case caught in its fur. The case has tiny hooks and holds seeds inside. The dog walks several steps. Then the case falls onto the ground.

Nia's class makes a model on a table beside the court. A cardboard animal stands for the dog. Six paper seed shapes stand for the hooked seed cases. An adult puts a small hook-fastener dot on each paper seed. These dots have tiny hooks.

The class tests two covers for the cardboard animal: smooth card and fuzzy cloth. For each test, students gently press six paper seeds against the cover at mat A. They move the animal along the same path to tray B at the same speed. They count the paper seeds still attached when the animal reaches the tray. They change the cover but keep the animal, paper seeds, and path the same. The graph shows their results.
