About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students connect parts of a simple model to an animal, seeds, and a seed hiding spot.
  • Students use model results to predict how an animal can move seeds to new places.
  • Students explain how seeds left by an animal could grow away from the starting plant.

How to use

Read the desert observations aloud, then discuss the model and graph. Students can plan their own model on paper or try it with large paper tokens and a folded paper pouch.

Watch a Seed Traveler

Read about Sandstone Hollow. Use the observations to choose and explain model ideas.

A Night in the Desert

Sandstone Hollow is a sandy place in the desert. Grass grows between the rocks. One evening, a watcher saw a kangaroo rat gather fallen grass seeds. It put the seeds in pouches on the outside of its cheeks. Then it ran away from the grass patch. It stopped beside a rock, cleaned its whiskers, and rested.

Later, the rat put seeds into a shallow hole farther from the grass patch and covered them with soil. Kangaroo rats save seeds to eat later. Some saved seeds may be left behind. A seed left in suitable soil may sprout when it gets enough water. For a class model, large paper tokens will stand for seeds. A folded paper pouch will stand for the rat's cheek pouches.
