The Summit Nature Center Change Demo

Use test results to explain which changes can be undone.

Read the center report

The summit nature center team tested two samples during a training day. Read the numbered report and use the observations to answer the questions.

Two Samples at the Summit Center

11. The team placed a small clear ice pellet in a cup. An adult set the cup in warm water. After ten minutes, the pellet was gone, and liquid water covered the bottom of the cup.

22. The team poured the water into a small mold and placed it in the center freezer. After twenty minutes, the water was a solid ice pellet again. The amount of water looked the same as before.

33. The team placed a white, compact marshmallow on a tray. An adult warmed it on a protected warming plate until it became larger and light brown. The marshmallow was then left on the table until it felt cool.

44. The cooled marshmallow was still larger and light brown. It felt chewy instead of white and compact. The team did not see it return to its starting appearance.

What caused the ice pellet to become liquid water?
  • A. The team put the cup in the freezer.
