Nia’s Rooftop Garden Change Journal

Use field notes to explain changes caused by heating and cooling.

Read the rooftop journal

Nia kept a field journal while her class studied materials on a city rooftop garden. Read the entries and use the observations as evidence.

Nia’s Field Journal

Day 1 — Our class mixed gelatin powder with water. An adult heated the mixture until it was clear and liquid. We placed the cup on a shaded table. After it cooled to room temperature, it was a wobbly gel.

Day 2 — We placed the same gel cup in a bowl of warm water. An adult watched the test. The gel became liquid again. We put the cup back on the shaded table. After it cooled, it became a wobbly gel again.

Day 3 — An adult placed a raw egg in hot water. Before heating, the egg white was clear and runny. After heating, it was white and firm. The egg cooled on the table, but the egg white stayed white and firm.

Journal data: Gelatin: liquid before cooling; wobbly gel after cooling; liquid after warming; wobbly gel after cooling again. Egg white: clear and runny before heating; white and firm after heating; white and firm after cooling.

1.
