Lena and the Lighthouse

1Lena lived in a little house by the sea. Her uncle was the keeper of the lighthouse on the rocky point. Every night he climbed the long stairs to the lamp at the top and made sure it shone.

2One evening, thick fog rolled in from the water. Lena could not see the sea or the sky. A cold wind blew across the point. "Ships cannot find the harbor tonight," said her uncle. "We must keep the lamp bright."

3Lena climbed the stairs with her uncle. He lit the lamp, and a bright beam swept over the water. Soon a small boat blew its horn. "We see you!" called Lena. The boat turned toward the shore and sailed safely into the harbor.
